AML State of Play – Special Edition on AI
AML State of Play – Special Edition on AI, is a unique survey involving 28 financial institutions in Sweden. It sheds light on the current use of AI in anti-money-laundering, in what areas companies have advanced the most and where the greatest potential is identified ahead.
The report also analyses issues around the availability of AI expertise, uncertainty around regulatory requirements, and how senior management and boards tackle the topic of return on investment in relation to much needed replacements of inadequate systems.
Did you know that:
• One in three financial institutes have not yet begun to explore AI solutions.
• 42% confirm that they are investigating potential applications.
• 17% have ongoing pilot projects, and 8% are planning some type of implementation.
The report, published on August 12 2025, is based on 40 questions posed anonymously to senior AML functions at financial institutions in Sweden, including in addition to the current status of AI adoption, prioritised areas of AI application, issues around data and measuring the effectiveness of AI applications. It also talks about incremental implementation and how organisations can take a practical approach to measurements and maturity.
It maps out challenges that hinder organizations from taking strategic transformative steps, how they address the need for new expertise, and the capacity available to manage necessary measures.
